    Abstract of Certification of Solar Glass

    The performance of a solar collector depends on the components from which it is assembled. Besides the absorber, the most important component is the collector cover, which in general is a glass pane. The optical properties of the glass pane directly affects the efficiency of the collector and thus the solar thermal system performance.
     
    To date, there has been a tendency to associate high quality and superior optical properties with the expression “solar glass”. However, a specification for solar glass has not been defined.
     
    By introducing the solar glass certification system, a qualification of the glass by a glass efficiency will be possible. The glass efficiency is the product of 4 different factors. The factors describe the influence of the solar transmittance, the incidence angle modifier, the photo-degradation and the other degradation of the glass pane on the collector filed efficiency of a solar thermal system.
     
    Based on the glass efficiency, the glass is assigned to a specific “solar glass class” reaching from 1(highest performance) to 4 (lowest performance). Below a certain limit, the glass will not be a certified “solar glass”. In order to take into account that treated glasses have an additional risk of failure, these glasses are classified in separate groups.
     
    The benefit of “solar glass certification” will be twofold. First, the performance of a glass cover can be simply evaluated by a collector manufacturer. Second, glass covers which belong to a certain performance class can be replaced by an equivalent or better type, without significantly reducing the system performance.
